One of the biggest food trends I’ve been tracking for the last few years is mushrooms. Mushrooms are a highly nutritious food with numerous health benefits, from your gut to your brain and overall immune system. Not to mention that they just taste good, whether you’re making a simple mushroom toast or my favorite spanakopita stuffed mushrooms or a hearty mushroom pasta. Mushrooms are definitely one of my favorite ingredients to finesse into delicious dishes for my Los Angeles personal chef clients. Here are some of the key ways that eating mushrooms can promote health and well-being:

Boost Immunity

Some types of mushrooms, such as shiitake and maitake (also called hen-of-the-wood), contain beta-glucans, which are compounds that help to boost the immune system by stimulating the activity of white blood cells.

Mushrooms contain a high level of potassium, which is a mineral that helps to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease. Additionally, they are low in calories and fat, which also helps to maintain a healthy heart.

Mushrooms are Tasty

In addition to these health benefits, mushrooms are also a versatile food that can be easily incorporated into a variety of recipes. They are delicious cooked or raw, and can be added to soups, stews, casseroles, stir-fries, and more. I love the savory umami quality that impart to anything they’re cooked into. You can even dehydrate mushrooms (or buy them already dehydrated) and grind them into a powder. Use that powder to level up the depth of flavor in everything from stews to pastas. You can even use it as a simple rub on a protein.

However,  please note that while most mushrooms are safe to eat, some wild mushrooms can be toxic and cause serious health problems if consumed. If you are unsure about which mushrooms are safe to eat, it is best to consult a knowledgeable expert or purchase mushrooms from a reputable source.
